An accessible remote control interface for a semi-autonomous vehicle hos Syntronic

Description of the thesis proposal:

In this project we propose to investigate an approach for navigation with a remote controlled vehicle, where the goal is to implement a point-and-click-based GUI for driving a remote controlled electric car.

Remote controlled vehicles are often used in industrial and military applications where the environment is considered not suitable or safe for humans. Here, we propose to investigate an approach for a remote control system where an operator can drive a vehicle in real-time by defining a destination by simply marking a point in a live-view as seen from the vehicle. The operational procedure is then similar to “navigating” in some virtual 3D maps, such as Google street view.

The project can be divided into two major parts:

  • Path planning. Implementing code (using ROS) for autonomously driving the vehicle to a defined destination given as an offset from current vehicle position.
  • User interface/GUI. Implementing an interface for a remote live-camera system that calculates positional offset (distance and angle) to any given point within view.

Implementation of path planning and autonomous driving is done on a pre-existing development car platform running ROS on a Nvidia Jetson board. The control GUI is implemented on a desktop or tablet platform and connects to the car platform by WIFI.

What we're looking for:

The proposed project will require one or two dedicated students, with interests in a wide range of engineering subjects, such as embedded programming, ROS and user interface design. Previous experience with software development in ROS and implementing a GUI is welcomed. Depending on the applicant’s background and interests, we are flexible in the exact scope of the thesis project.
