Social Life Cycle Analysis of batteries

Northvolt has an exciting opportunity for eager master students to join our passionate Environmental team to do their thesis work.
By joining us you will play a part in building the world’s greenest battery. Northvolt will play an important role in the transformation to a carbon free society.
The master student will contribute to our work on social Life-cycle-assessment (sLCA) of batteries to eventuate total sustainability impact from a battery over its lifetime. The thesis will do a screening social-LCA for European battery production and perform a literature review of existing framework for sLCA. The work requires extensive analysis of the battery value chain and in-depth knowledge on ethical and social aspects relating to mining, refining, production, recycling and use of batteries and battery components. You will be working intimately with the environmental team and sustainability experts with the aim of develop and propose a framework of performing industrial sLCA on lithium ion battery production.
In general, you have passion for sustainability and with knowledge of working with LCA, value chain assessment and/or human rights and social development.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Literature review of sLCA
  • Set up framework for battery sLCA
  • Screening sLCA of the European battery value chain
  • Mapping the main social impacts related to the key raw material supply’s chain
  • Contribute on the score card improvement and propose a risk-oriented approach

Skills & Requirements

Education/Experience


  • BS degree in environmental science, engineering, peace and development studies, social science (or other relevant university degrees)

  • Experience and/or interest in Life Cycle Assessments

  • Excellent English written and oral skills, Swedish is a plus
  • Highly organized and result-driven
